Shadic was starting to wonder what this conversation had become. In fact, he didn't even remember what the main idea of the conversation was. It seemed like it had been going on for a while about a bunch of things he would teach somebody who was new to the whole ki thing, like a kid or something. Why was the new councilman of South City even seeking advice from some ordinary civilian anyways?
"Yeah, if they are strong enough you can feel them from almost anywhere at pretty much any time. Pretty weird. Say, why is it you were seeking me out again? I'm sorry if I already asked, but I feel like this conversation has gone off topic," He wasn't going to try and lie about his confusion like some people might. Honesty was always the right answer in Shadic's book, even if it may seem rude sometimes.
Sythius was engrossed with the conversation. He was finally talking to somebody who used ki, and they were helping him! Plus, he genuinely liked Shadic for the nice things he did for him. Most of the people Sythius knew were boring and did everything wrong! They just made him so angry, and it was their fault! When Shadic told him that the conversation was off topic, he was greatly surprised.
"Huh?" What were they talking about? The question confuzzled him. Sythius patted his suit down, and clumsily emptied his already-frayed suit pockets onto the ground. A single piece of paper flopped to the ground... it had some writing on it. With an 'aha', Sythius picked it up, and tapped the piece of paper. A few seconds passed, and the paper said a single word: "recruit".
Sythius seemed to forget the reason he was originally looking for Shadic, until he pulled out a sheet of paper. After dropping it, picking it up, and reading it, Sythius asked a seemingly obvious question. The hybrid answered emphatically, "I would say it is my favorite hobby by far, yes. Somebody has to do it," It was an odd question to ask, since it seemed so obvious. In fact, Shadic couldn't even think of anybody else who put their life on the line as much as him to protect Earth, aside from maybe the amnesiac Nexon.
The lizard man seemed to enjoy beating around the bush, or maybe he got distracted easily. Whatever the case, Shadic was confused about how he managed to beat all other candidates to become the councilman of South City. Ignoring the deaths of both Edgy and Skylar, one that seemed to be a hit from Sythius himself, there probably should have been a better person for the position out there somewhere.
"Well, uh... would you like to be paid for it?" He couldn't delay it any further, and at this point, he had to say it.
He didn't remember the details. They didn't interest him, so he didn't focus very hard.
"The government is trying to recruit powerful martial artists to defend the Earth from threats. The guy that attempted to murder Skylar and the terrorist that attacked this location are two examples. There aren't many people that could really stop them.
Paid to protect people? It was hard to even think about. He kind of collectively saved up whatever loose change he could find for his whole life, so the thought of making money just by doing what he did was rather odd. Shadic inquired, "So basically, I'm an upgraded cop? I get a paycheck to protect the people from anything within my power?"
It did not seem like a bad gig, but Shadic worried a little bit. From his understanding, some creature named 'Godzilla' was the president of Earth, meaning he would be the boss of the hybrid. "I wouldn't mind being paid under one condition. I won't kill anybody. Period. It just won't happen. Aside from that, I'm down."
Sythius smiled. "Sure, that's fine, and completely noble!" He had no control over that and he knew it. He wasn't comfortable with lying, but he was worried that Shadic wouldn't join if he knew that he might have to kill some people. 'I wish there was a third way!'
"Well, the issue might be more complex than I lead on... you'd probably be better off letting the government know about any reservations," Sythius added meekly.
"I'd like to think the government's rules can bend a little bit. Especially if they want somebody as able to defend Earth as me," Shadic shrugged, figuring it wasn't a big deal. Either way, paycheck or not, he was going to keep protecting the planet with his life through thick and thin.
"I mean, I already do a lot of their work for them anyways. If they want to pay me to keep doing what I've been doing, that's just icing on the cake. My main goal in life is to make sure the people of this planet are safe because I feel like it is my responsibility. After that terrorist attack a few weeks ago, I couldn't sleep for days. I'm sure you can understand where I'm coming from," He was not actually sure if Sythius could understand where he was coming from, judging by their earlier conversation, but Shadic said it to seem more relatable to the giant lizard creature alien thing.
"The government's not too strict... they'll work with you." he said. "They'll use 'whatever' they can to the fullest extent possible... if they really want you," his tone shifted, becoming dark and unhappy. The lizard made eye contact with the saiyan, before swapping his attention to the ground. He batted at pebbles with his tail.
"I know what you mean... it was pretty jarring. I still don't really 'get' how someone can be that strong. Whoever that was could crush me like a bug!" he took a gulp, and murmured "I guess I really need to train more... South City needs it."
Shadic did not like the sound of the government using 'whatever they could' to get what they want. From the way Sythius said it, the politician did not like it too much either. It was good to hear the lizard man creature wanted to protect his city, even though he was not the strongest yet. Shadic nodded his head in agreement, "I think becoming stronger to protect the city yourself, along with whatever your policies are or whatever, would be a good way to build trust and, uh, stuff,"
He wasn't great with politics, but he knew citizen trust was important for reelection, and that is every politician's ultimate goal. Shadic smiled as he spoke again, "Anyways, I'm sure I can convince good ol' Godzilla to be a little more lenient on me. I feel like he is a very compassionate person on the inside."
"Yeah! The people will love me!" he returned his attention to Shadic, now happy again. Throughout this whole super awkward meeting, the lizard flung from one end of an emotional swing set to the other, over and over again. It was a common thing for him, and it was quite blatant when it was happening. Generally, he became sad whenever someone made him feel weak or stupid and felt good when he felt useful, wanted, or better than others.
"Well... I haven't exactly met Godzilla. I've never really figured out how he became Eternal President." Godzilla was a mysterious figure, to the public, and Sythius was no different. "The Government isn't very strong, actually. I could do whatever I wanted in the city, and there wouldn't be much of a reaction unless I was endangering the planet!" The politician smiled with glee. He enjoyed being able to do whatever he felt like. In fact, he didn't even know what he would have done if he didn't win the election. He hated following orders!
